VESTAVIA HILLS, Ala. - The UAB softball team defeated Alabama A&M, 8-0, in five innings Sunday to conclude the All-Alabama Classic at Liberty Park in Vestavia Hills, Ala.
The Blazers improve to 2-3, while Alabama A&M falls to 0-5.
Sophomore third baseman Kate Armstrong was named to the All-Alabama Classic All-Tournament Team after hitting .357 for the weekend with five hits, one run and five RBI.
UAB's Lauren Webster (1-1) picked up her first win of the 2011 season after tossing seven strikeouts and giving up just one hit in the first three innings against Alabama A&M. Freshman Lannah Campbell took over in the fourth and allowed no hits in the final two innings.
Four Blazers recorded two hits in Sunday's contest, which saw 15 different Blazers in the lineup.
"I felt that Lauren Webster came out strong," UAB head coach Marla Townsend said. "Lannah Campbell came in relief, and not only did she do a good job pitching and keeping the batters on their toes, she also had several nice shots at the plate. We need to adjust a little better at the plate, but for the most part we played solid defense and I'm looking forward to building on what we saw this weekend and taking that to next weekend's tournament."
UAB scored its first two runs in the first frame after leadoff hitter Caley Walden reached on an infield single and scored on a wild pitch. Douglass, who reached on an intended sacrifice bunt, scored on a sacrifice fly by Armstrong to jump out to the early 2-0 lead.
The Blazers tacked on two more runs in the third inning after freshman Kristen McGrath belted a single to left centerfield to plate Armstrong. Mandy Lowman scored on a base hit by Campbell, who advanced to second on the throw.
The Green and Gold claimed the 6-0 advantage in the fourth. Catherine Douglass blasted a single up the middle to plate Donna Plath, who reached on a base hit. Next up, Kayla Orr hit a sacrifice fly, followed by a groundout by Megan McGrath to score Sallie Van Kirk.
The Blazers completed the run-rule of the Bulldogs in the fifth inning after Tiffany Smith reached on a base hit and scored after Plath knocked a double to centerfield. Then, with the bases loaded, Alabama A&M pitcher Cassandra Brown (0-2) walked Issa Brown to plate the winning run for UAB.
The Blazers will return to action this Friday at the USF-Wilson-DeMarini Tournament in Clearwater, Fla. UAB will face Indiana in its tournament opener Friday at 4 p.m. ET.
