BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB women’s soccer team closed out a 2011 season that was highlighted by several individual and team accomplishments.
First year head coach Harold Warren guided the young team consisting of eight freshmen, six sophomores, two juniors and four seniors to a 6-12-1 overall finish and a 3-7-1 mark in Conference USA action.
Here is a look back at the 2011 campaign:
A Year of Firsts
• The 2011 season marked the inaugural year for head coach Harold Warren. Before taking the helm of the UAB program, Warren, served as associate head coach at the University of Southern California (2007-10).
• Three of the five true freshmen tallied their first collegiate goals this season. Midfielders Sarah Hopper and Johanna Liney each netted a goal in the 4-2 win against Ole Miss (9/17). Defender Mary Catherine Combs notched her first on the road at Belmont (9/2) to help the Blazers capture the 3-2 overtime victory.
• Junior Emma Smith recorded her first career multi-goal game, including her first ever game-winning goal, against Ole Miss. The Jacksonville, Fla. product scored a season-best four points in the contest in a span of just two minutes. The midfielder recorded her first ever assist in the 1-0 victory against UTEP (10/16).
• The Blazers handed the Colorado College its first Conference USA loss of the 2011 season on Oct. 14, snapping the Tigers’ eight-game unbeaten streak. Carolyn Polcari netted the goal in the 1-0 victory while redshirt freshman CJ Winship recorded her third shutout of the season.
• Senior Pascale Pinard, who made the transition from a defender to a midfielder, scored the first two goals of the season for UAB. The Trois-Rivieres, Quebec, Canada native ended her career with three goals and five assists for a career-high 11 points.

Turpin, Polcari Earn All-Conference Accolades
A pair of UAB women’s soccer players picked up All-Conference USA honors, as seniors Tiffini Turpin and Carolyn Polcari nabbed a spot on the All-Conference USA First and Third Teams, respectively.
Pinard Selected To C-USA All-Academic Team
Senior Pascale Pinard earned Conference USA All-Academic First Team honors for the second-straight year as she was named to the conference all-academic second team in 2010.
A native of Trois-Rivieres, Quebec, Canada, Pinard is a three-time recipient of the C-USA Commissioner’s Academic Medal and three-time member of the C-USA Commissioner’s Honor Roll. She maintains a team-high 3.92 overall GPA in physical education.
Conference USA Players of the Week
Redshirt freshman goalkeeper CJ Winship was selected as the Conference USA Defensive Player of the Week (Oct. 17), marking the first weekly honor in Winship’s career as well as the first garnered by the Blazers in 2011.
Senior forward Tiffini Turpin was selected as the Conference USA Offensive Player of the Week for the week of Oct. 31. The award marked the third in Turpin’s career as she earned the accolade on Oct. 13, 2008 and Aug. 31, 2009.
Rewriting the Records
Seniors Carolyn Polcari and Tiffini Turpin have climbed the ranks in several career categories after their four years as Blazers.

Stellar Standouts
• Senior Allison Young started in 16 of UAB’s 19 total matches. The defender launched nine shots, five on frame, and was a force in the backfield for the Blazers. The Evansville, Ind. native is a leader on the field as well as in the classroom as she maintains a 3.91 overall GPA in accounting.
• Junior Emma Smith had a break-out season for the Blazers. She started in 17 matches compared to her combined four starts in the previous two years. The midfielder recorded career highs in several categories including goals (3), assists (1), points (7) and shots (21).
• Sophomore Kirsten Ebert netted her first collegiate goal at Kennesaw State (9/11), giving the midfielder a season-high two points. The Suwanee, Ga. native fired a career-high 15 shots with eight locked on the target. She balances her responsibilities on the field with a 4.00 GPA in her field of communications.
• Sophomore Sam Bradford was an anchor on the defense in 2011. The defender started in 18 contests and finished the 2011 campaign in the top five of the team with four points (1g, 2a).
• Redshirt freshman goalie CJ Winship completed the season 5-6-1 with three shutouts. The Ridgeland, Miss. native registered a .775 save percentage, placing her eighth among all C-USA netminders while she finished fifth in the league with a 5.31 saves per game average.
• Freshman keeper Katie Getzinger made 56 saves in just seven games. The 7.00 saves per game is good enough for tops in the league.
