HUNTINGTON, W.Va. -- The UAB women's soccer team battled Conference USA opponent Marshall to a 1-1 tie at Sam Hood Field on Sunday afternoon. The senior duo of Carolyn Polcari and Tiffini Turpin combined for half of UAB's total shots, a season-high 34.
Turpin fired a career-high nine shots, tied for the third-most every by a UAB player in a single-game. Polcari matched her career-high with eight shots.
"We were solid in the first half," head coach Harold Warren said. "In the second half, we created several scoring chances and were in complete control of the game. It's hard to believe we couldn't poke a few more in for the win."
UAB (3-7-1, 0-2-1) peppered Marshall keeper Lindsey Kerns (0-1-1) throughout the match, tallying 10 shots in the first half and 16 in the second.
But it was the Thundering Herd (2-8-2, 0-2-1) who got on the board first in the 19th minute. Forward Chelsey Maiden fed the ball to freshman midfielder Alyssa Cathey who then ripped a shot from 25 yards out on the right side of the field and into the goal.
Polcari knotted the score in the second half at the 64-minute mark. Turpin had control of the ball with a path to the net when she was bumped by Kerns. The goalie was yellow-carded in the box giving UAB an opportunity to net the equalizer. Polcari sank the penalty kick into the bottom left portion of the goal for her second career PK.
Both teams had several chances to put the other away. Outstanding defense preserved the tie through double overtime.
The Blazers launched eight shots in overtime with three locked on target, but Kerns made the saves improving her total in the match to 12.
UAB goalkeeper CJ Winship (2-1-1) protected the net for the entire 110 minutes and made a career-high nine saves in the contest.
The Blazers begin a four-game Conference USA home-stretch on Friday with a matchup against Tulsa. Kickoff is slated for 7 p.m. CT.
