BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The UAB women’s soccer team could not overcome a three-goal deficit after the first half, as Conference USA opponent Tulsa topped the Blazers, 3-0, on Friday night at West Campus Field.
Depsite the loss, UAB (3-8-1, 0-3-1 C-USA) held a 15-8 shot advantage and out-cornered the Golden Hurricane 6-0. Senior Carolyn Polcari totaled four shots, three on target, to lead the Blazers.
“I give credit to Tulsa. They played well,” head coach Harold Warren said. “We came out sluggish and they punished us.”
Tulsa (8-4-2, 2-2-1) took the lead 10 minutes into the game when defender Claire Hulcer served forward Lindsay Kirch right in front of UAB net minder CJ Winship. Kirch fired the ball past Winship and into the bottom left corner of the goal.
Sophomore Claire Nicholson tallied Tulsa’s second goal with sophomore Jordan O’Brien recording the assist in the 21st minute. Hulcer added the Golden Hurricane’s final goal at the 29 minute mark when she launched a free kick from the top of the box into the back of the net.
Both teams played aggressively throughout the match. UAB got off to a slow start with four shots in the first half, but after a red card was issued to Tulsa forward Stephanie Aitken in the 35th minute the Blazers gained momentum heading into the second half, peppering Tulsa keeper Katie Bykowski with 11 shots.
UAB returns to the pitch on Sunday against SMU at West Campus Field. The Blazers and Mustangs kick off at 2 p.m. CT.
