BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --Cameron Moore hit a 3-pointer with two seconds left in triple overtime and UAB beat UTEP 100-97 in Conference USA play on Saturday. It was the first triple overtime game for the Blazers since a 102-95 victory over Alabama State on Jan. 3, 1995.
Moore finished with a career-high 29 points and 14 rebounds for the Blazers (11-3, 1-0), who have won five of their last six games. Aaron Johnson scored 26 points, dished out 14 assists, grabbed seven rebounds and committed six turnovers. The 14 assists tied the single-game school record, set by former Blazer great Jack Kramer on Nov. 23, 1990. Furthermore, his 26 points and seven boards were both season highs.
Claude Britten's jumper gave UTEP a 97-94 lead with 1:47 left to play. But the Miners (13-4, 1-1) did not score again, as UAB tied the game at 97-97 on Preston Purifoy's 3-pointer and won the game on Moore's basket.
Randy Culpepper, who led UTEP with 34 points, tried to send the game into a fourth OT. But his 3-point attempt missed as time expired. Julyan Stone finished with 14 points and had nine assists.
Jamarr Sanders scored 18 points for the Blazers, who snapped a three-game losing streak against UTEP. Freshman Quincy Taylor, who made his first career start for the Green and Gold, finished with a career-high 11 points.
The back and forth contest featured 11 lead changes and 13 ties. The Blazers looked as if they had the game in hand in both regulation and in the first overtime. However, the Miners got long range bombs for Christian Polk and Culpepper to extend the contest.
Polk's trey at the end of regulation went down with two-tenths of a second remaining, while Culpepper's three was with three-tenths of a second left on the clock.
The Miners battled their way to a seven-point halftime advantage, but UAB shot 59.3 percent (16-of-27) in the second half to storm back and lead by as many as five points with 3:01 remaining in regulation. Sanders led the comeback, scoring 16 of his 18 points in the second half.
The Blazers will next square off at East Carolina on Wednesday night at 7 p.m. ET. The contest will mark the first league road game for the Blazers.
