BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Ryan Woolley, a senior right-handed pitcher for the baseball team, has been selected as the UAB Student-Athlete of the Week.
Woolley has excelled both on and off the field for the Blazers. On the diamond, the Montclair, Va., native spent a good part of last season in the weekend rotation, as he appeared in 16 games with nine starts for the Green and Gold. He finished the campaign with a 3-4 record and 48 strikeouts in 64.0 innings pitched.
Woolley, a former Georgia transfer, has been selected in each of the last two Major League Baseball drafts, taken as high as the sixth round in 2009. However, he has opted to return to UAB on both occasions.
A communications major with a minor in mass communications, Woolley boasts a 3.87 GPA during his two-plus years UAB (including a redshirt year in 2009) and a 3.66 GPA during his college career (UAB and Georgia). He is a two-time member of the Conference USA Commissioner's Honor Roll and was awarded the C-USA Academic Medal in 2009.
The UAB Student-Athlete of the Week is highlighted each Saturday morning on Blazers All-Access, which airs locally at 11:30 a.m. on ABC 33/40.
Woolley and the Blazers open the 2011 campaign Feb. 18-20 as the travel to Auburn, Ala., to compete at the Auburn Classic. The Blazers will open with Virginia on Feb. 18 at 2 p.m. CT, followed by games with Arkansas State (Feb. 19 at 5 p.m. CT) and tournament host Auburn (Feb. 20 at 3 p.m. CT).
