BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The UAB women's soccer team fell to in-state foe Alabama, 1-0, on Sunday evening at West Campus Field. The Blazers (0-2) owned a 10-6 shot advantage over the Crimson Tide (2-0) and put three shots on frame, but were unable to capitalize on the opportunities.
"From every aspect of the game, I felt like we dominated the match," head coach Paul Harbin said. "Shots, possession, opportunities, but we made one mistake and Alabama capitalized. We didn't take advantage of our opportunities. We've got to be better at finishing. It's not good enough to dominate every other aspect until we put the ball in the back of the net."
The lone goal of the match came in the seventh minute when midfielder Molly Atherton passed to forward Victoria Frederick on the right flank. Frederick crossed to forward Brooke Rogers, who one-timed the ball with a high kick into the corner of the net.
UAB narrowly missed the equalizer in the 13th minute when forward Tiffini Turpin drilled an arching shot and Alabama goalkeeper Justine Bernier lost the ball in the sun, but it hit the crossbar and the Blazers were unable to capitalize on the ricochet.
In addition to out-shooting Alabama, the Blazers also held a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks. Despite the loss, Harbin was encouraged by his team's improvement from Friday.
"Our organization in the back was much better tonight compared to Friday," Harbin said. "We only gave up two shots on goal in the game, so typically if we do that defensively, we'll be ok."
The Blazers hit the road for the upcoming weekend, traveling to Mississippi State and Ole Miss. UAB will take on the Bulldogs Friday at 7 p.m. before facing the Rebels on Sunday at 1 p.m.
