BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- UAB baseball player Keith DePew wrapped up his Alaskan summer last week by earning the nod as the second baseman on the All-Alaska Baseball League Second Team.
DePew, soon to be a junior at UAB, hit .265 for the Athletes in Action Fire of the ABL. The Trussville, Ala., product doubled four times, scored 16 runs and drove in 10 as a starter in 33 games.
The ABL is a six-team, wood-bat summer league featuring collegiate players from across the country. The AIA Fire is based in Fairbanks.
The Blazers have been well represented in Alaska in recent years with former standouts Brint Hardy (2008 ABL Player of the Year) and Jonathan Merritt (2008 All-ABL Second Team) also performing well for the AIA Fire. UAB pitcher Ryan Woolley played in Alaska in 2009.
As a sophomore this past spring, DePew played in 22 games with 12 starts for UAB. A versatile player, he spent most of the 2010 season as an outfielder.
Blazers playing across the country have had successful summer seasons. In addition to DePew's honor, five UAB players have been named all-stars in their summer leagues: Woolley (California Collegiate League), Jamal Austin and Jacob German (Great Lakes Summer Collegiate League) and Trey Vice and Ryan Ussery (Great South League).
