BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- The UAB Blazers will hold their first workout of the preseason on Monday as they officially begin 2010 camp in preparation of the upcoming campaign.
Players will report back to campus Sunday, have meetings with various athletics department and campus officials that afternoon and conclude the day with a team dinner Sunday evening. The team will get on the practice field for the first time Monday at 3:15 p.m.
Head coach Neil Callaway, who begins his fourth season at the helm of the program, will have nearly a full allotment of scholarship student-athletes for the first time in his tenure at UAB.
"That is big for us," Callaway said. "I'm happy we will be playing with pretty much a full deck this time as far as scholarship players. We'll see how it works out if we end up with 85, or if it's 82 or 83, but it's certainly going to be better than 63, 68 and 73 which is where we've been the last three years.
"We're excited about getting everybody in there. The guys have worked hard this summer and we're ready to go."
UAB's first day in full pads will be Friday, August 6. Fall semester classes begin at UAB on Tuesday, Aug. 17.
The Blazers open the 2010 season at home on Thursday, Sept. 2 when Florida Atlantic visits Legion Field for a 7:00 p.m. kickoff.
