BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The UAB women's tennis program has earned an NCAA Public Recognition Award for its exceptional work in the classroom.
The awards are given annually to teams scoring in the top 10 percent in each sport with their Academic Progress Rate, which provides a real-time view of a team's academic success by tracking the progress of each student-athlete during the school year.
Teams receiving public recognition awards this year posted APR scores ranging from 978 to a perfect 1,000. The most recent APRs are multi-year rates based on scores from the 2005-06, 2006-07, 2007-08 and 2008-09 academic years.
The UAB women's tennis team's APR over that four-year stretch is a perfect 1,000. Full APR scores for the latest academic year for all Division I sports teams will be released later this spring.
The award is the latest in a line of honors for the UAB women's tennis program. Jenny Cape was recently selected to the Conference USA All-Academic Team for the second year in a row, while nine Blazers made the C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll. Cape joined Ceylan Engin and Evelien Strijker as ITA Scholar-Athletes in 2009 when UAB was honored as an ITA All-Academic Team.
Based on their most recent multi-year Academic Progress Rates, 841 teams earned NCAA Public Recognition Awards. The 841 teams recognized this year represent 13.4 percent of the 6,297 eligible Division I teams. The list includes 492 women's teams and 349 men's or mixed squads.
