UAB Softball Hosts South Alabama For Midweek Matchup

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- UAB softball continues a game-filled week Wednesday when it hosts South Alabama for a contest at UAB Softball Field. The first pitch is set for 3 p.m. CT.
Wednesday's matchup marks the second meeting between the two teams this year. The Blazers downed the Jaguars, 6-0, at the South Alabama Invitational on Feb. 21. The series between UAB and South Alabama is currently tied at 2-2.
In its last outing, UAB (22-9, 6-3 C-USA) took a pair of games from Kennesaw State Monday afternoon at UAB Softball Field. The Blazers defeated the Owls, 4-2, in the first matchup, and blanked them, 7-0, to claim the doubleheader.
Sophomore catcher Mandy Lowman went 4-for-7 Monday with one run, and Erica Sisson blasted her first career home run to tally two runs for the Blazers in the first game.
Last weekend, UAB swept a three-game series with Houston. The Blazers defeated Houston, 3-2, in game one and, 8-2, in the night cap Friday. The Blazers had an eight-run first inning Saturday, which was capped off with a grand slam from senior Martina Landrum. UAB run-ruled the Cougars, 11-3, in six innings.
Sophomore Kayla Orr hit at a .636 clip and recorded an .818 slugging percentage over the weekend. In the series finale, Orr went 4-for-4 with three RBI and one run.
UAB's bats have been blazin' as the Green and Gold lead C-USA with a .297 batting average, .462 slugging percentage and .367 on-base percentage. In addition to Landrum, Orr and Lowman, junior Caley Walden and senior Cameron Skates are all hitting above the .300 mark.
South Alabama (15-15, 3-4 Sun Belt) enters Wednesday's contest after going 1-2 in a conference series at Florida Atlantic last weekend. The Jaguars defeated the Owls, 3-1, before falling, 6-2, and, 1-0.
Third baseman Christian Crocker leads the team with a .353 batting average and has recorded 30 hits and 13 RBI this season. Second baseman Brittany Fowler is close behind, hitting .327, while rightfielder Hailey Hopkins has blasted a team-high eight home runs.
In the circle, Beth Pilgrim (11-7) has recorded a 1.86 ERA after tossing three shutouts and retiring 157 batters in 21 appearances for the Jags.
