BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- The UAB softball team will be back in action this weekend as it hosts Houston for a three-game conference series starting with a doubleheader Friday at 4 p.m. CT at UAB Softball Field. The series continues Saturday with a contest at 11 a.m.
Friday's game marks the 27th meeting between the two teams, with Houston leading the series, 21-6. Last April, the Cougars claimed a three-game sweep in Houston, but narrowly escaped UAB by one run in each of the final two games.
In its last outing, UAB (17-9, 3-3 C-USA) fell to No. 5 Alabama, 6-2, at the Alabama Softball Complex on March 24. Junior leftfielder Caley Walden knocked a triple and crossed the plate twice for the Blazers on base hits by Kayla Orr and Mandy Lowman. Senior third baseman Cameron Skates also belted her 11th double of the season in the sixth, the second-most in C-USA.
In conference play, UAB claimed its series with Marshall, 2-1, two weeks ago in Huntington, W. Va. The Blazers currently lead C-USA in with a .290 batting average and .447 slugging percentage. Senior centerfielder Martina Landrum fronts the Blazer offensive attack, batting .407 with 11 extra base hits, 13 RBI and 54 total bases.
Houston (18-16, 5-4 C-USA) enters this weekend's series after dropping a doubleheader to Louisiana-Lafayette Tuesday. The Cougars were shut out by a combined score of 10-0 at Lamson Park to fall to 0-8 on the road.
Last weekend, Houston claimed a conference series against UTEP, 2-1. The Miners edged the Cougars, 2-1, in the first game, but Houston answered back and took the final game Saturday, 5-2, and scored seven runs in the sixth inning of Sunday's game to claim the series with a 8-5 win.
Houston centerfielder Ashleigh Jones leads the team with a .328 batting average, 13 runs and nine RBI, with rightfielder Angela Spittler close behind, hitting at a .321 clip. In the circle, Amanda Crabtree has posted a 2.49 ERA in 16 appearances, with 108 strikeouts and 33 earned runs allowed.
