BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- The UAB football team went through its first practice this spring with "live tackling" Wednesday as the Blazers work toward Friday's first spring scrimmage.
"This was the first day that we've had live tackling to the ground," UAB head coach Neil Callaway said of the fifth overall practice of the spring for his team. "We had five or six periods of live tackling and we had competition drills at the end."
Callaway noted that the defense had the advantage over the offense in Wednesday's competition session.
"The goal line defense won and if you go by the past, that was a little unusual," he said. "The offense has usually had the upperhand, but the defense got the better of the goal line today which was good to see."
Callaway said the play of a pair of newcomers caught his eye in Wednesday's practice.
"(Safety) Jamie Bender made two or three good plays again," he said. "He continues to do that. (RB) Pat Shed looks good running the football. Those two guys stood out to me today."
The Blazers will be back on the field Thursday for a light workout before holding their first scrimmage on Friday.
