BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- The UAB football team held its third practice of spring drills and its first in full pads here Saturday, leaving head coach Neil Callaway generally pleased with his team's performance.
"I thought it was a good first day in pads," Callaway said. "We're still mighty rusty with a lot of things. Overall, the effort, enthusiasm and attitude were good. But it was a typical first day. There were a lot of things we saw that weren't what we'd like.
Callaway singled out several players for their performances Saturday. On the offensive side, he noted offensive tackle Terence Edge while he said defensive tackle D.J. Reese, linebacker Keon Harris and safety Jamie Bender caught his eye on defense.
It was the second time in the first three workouts that Callaway mentioned Bender's play.
"He's making plays," Callaway said of the junior college transfer who enrolled at UAB in January. "He had an interception today and seems to be in good position, doing what he's supposed to be doing."
The Blazers will have a busy week ahead with four practices scheduled, including the team's first spring scrimmage at the end of the week.
