BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- The UAB football team went through its first workout of 2010 spring practice Wednesday and head coach Neil Callaway left the field pleased with what he saw.
"With a first day, there are obviously a lot of things to get used to," Callaway said. "But I was very impressed with the tempo we practiced at. I thought the players were really in tune to what we were trying to do. Even though we were in helmets only and didn't have physical contact, I thought we got a lot done."
The Blazers, who are looking to improve on last season's 5-7 record and 4-4 mark in Conference USA play, return most of their starters on both sides of the ball. UAB has several newcomers who enrolled in January for the spring semester at practice.
"With the new guys you could see they are still feeling their way around a good bit," Callaway said. "I was very impressed with (CB) Jamie Bender and the reaction and movement he showed in the secondary." Bender is a 5-11, 195-pound transfer from Jones County Junior College in Mississippi.
The Blazers will be on the field again Friday for their second practice session and Callaway said the workout would be in shells and "exactly like today". The team will don full pads for the first time on Saturday.
