HUNTINGTON, W. Va. --- UAB claimed the series against Marshall 2-1, after explosive Blazer bats lifted UAB to an 8-3 win in the first game of the doubleheader Saturday. The Herd edged the Blazers, 3-2, in the second game.
"To have 25 hits today means that we were dominant at the plate," UAB head coach Marla Townsend said. "I'm proud of our hitting, but we still left 22 runners on base, so we need to do a better job bringing our runners across the plate."
UAB (17-8, 3-3 C-USA) scored its first run of the game after rightfielder Hailey Glynn crossed the plate on a Herd miscue. Marshall intentionally walked catcher Mandy Lowman to load the bases followed by a sacrifice fly by first baseman Kayla Orr to plate centerfielder Martina Landrum.
Marshall (15-12, 1-5 C-USA) jumped on the board in the fourth on an RBI-single by pinch hitter Victoria Marvin. The Herd tacked on two more runs to claim the lead after shortstop Alianna Telles blasted a two-run long ball over the center field wall.
Leftfielder Caley Walden smacked a double in the sixth, but was left on. Amber Torres took over in the circle for Alisha Smith (5-5) in the bottom of the sixth and struck out two batters as she held the Herd hitless for the remainder of the game, but the Blazers unable to round the diamond in the seventh as they fell, 3-2.
In the first game Saturday, UAB blasted 17 hits to rout Marshall, 8-3. Each member of the Blazer lineup recorded a hit as the Green and Gold smacked at least two hits in all but one inning.
An explosive first inning at the plate gave UAB the early 4-0 lead. Walden, third baseman Cameron Skates, Lowman, shortstop Catherine Douglass and second baseman Natalie Mitchell all knocked base hits and Landrum and Orr both took advantage of Marshall miscues to round the bases for the Blazers.
In the second, Skates' RBI-single tacked on another run for UAB and Orr's double to right center plated Skates to give UAB the 6-0 advantage.
Marshall came alive in the third as Telles hit a sacrifice fly with the bases loaded to score Hughes. Bertoldo also reached on a Van Kirk error in right and Gue crossed the plate after a wild pitch to tally the Herd's third run of the inning.
Designated player Kate Armstrong belted her second career long ball over the center field wall to score Skates, who reached on her 10th double of the season, to add two more runs for the Green and Gold
Pitcher Lauren Webster (8-2) fanned 11 batters and only gave up four hits and one walk in the victory.
Skates stood out offensively after hitting 4-for-5 with two runs and two RBI and Douglass went 3-for-4 with one RBI.
Aside from the third inning, the Blazer defense held the Herd scoreless, and forced a stretch early in the game where the Herd tallied more errors than hits.
The Blazers return to action Wednesday when they travel to Tuscaloosa to face in-state foe No. 5/8 Alabama at 6 p.m. CT at the Alabama Softball Complex.
