BIRMINGHAM, Ala. --- Amidst rain showers and windy conditions, the UAB track and field team competed at the 'Southern Invitational hosted by Birmingham-Southern Saturday to open its outdoor season.
"I feel like we got a lot done today," UAB interim head coach Kurt Thomas said. "We used this meet to jumpstart our outdoor season. We got some extra races in to improve our strength in some events, while improving speed in others."
Sophomore Lauren Fayen ran to a first-place finish in the 1500m run with a time of 4:39.22.
"Our 1500m girls ran very well," Thomas said. "Lauren Fayen is running really tough right now and I expect her to keep having a good season."
Also in the 1500m, sophomore Rhiannon Johns placed third with a time of 4:40.65.
Junior Timara McMillan took the event title in the 100m hurdle finals with a time of 14.38.
"Timara ran well in the hurdles despite a strong headwind, and our 400m girls also had a strong day," Thomas said.
In the 400m, freshman Angel Watson clocked a time of 57.88 to finish third.
In the 800m, senior Kendel Hood finished runner-up with a time of 2:20.21 and sophomore Kristina Vaughn placed third with a time of 2:21.72.
The Blazers return to action at the Alabama Relays in Tuscaloosa, Ala. on March 27.
