Mobile, Ala. --- In its second game of the South Alabama Invitational, the UAB softball team defeated Nicholls State, 3-1, Saturday at Jaguar Field.
The Blazers improve to 3-3 on the season with freshman pitcher Lauren Webster (1-1) picking up the win over the Colonels (2-1). Webster fanned 11 batters and only allowed one run during the game.
"I'm very proud of Lauren's composure throughout the game," UAB head coach Marla Townsend said. "She did a great job of keeping the hitters off balance."
Sophomore shortstop Kayla Orr tied the score 1-1 in the second, belting her first home run of the season over the centerfield wall.
The Colonels scored early in the first off a home run by leftfielder Audrey Wood.
The Blazer bats were hot in the third when Webster started off the inning with a single to the left side. Senior third baseman Cameron Skates then slugged a double to score Webster. Sophomore catcher Mandy Lowman also posted a double, scoring Skates to make the score 3-1.
In the fourth Orr and sophomore second baseman Natalie Mitchell both reached on errors, but were unable to score. Senior Martina Landrum slugged a triple to centerfield in the fifth, but was left on base. The Blazers left a total of five runners on base in their victory over the Colonels.
"Offensively we did a good job hitting beginning to end," Townsend said. "We had several back to back base hits and we were very smart and aggressive on the base path. We still need to be more aggressive at the plate because we're leaving too many runners on base."
In the top of the third inning, Nicholls State advanced pitcher Ashton Bennett to third but she was left on base. Shortstop Lyndsay Mesh went 2-for-3 on the day, with a double and a single, but a tough Blazer defense left her stranded on base after both hits.
The Green and Gold will play their third game of the South Alabama Invitational against Northwestern State at 4:30 p.m. CT Saturday at Jaguar Field.
