MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. ----- Former UAB quarterback Joe Webb didn't start the Minnesota Vikings' Monday Night Football game against the Chicago Bears, but he came on to relieve Brett Favre in the second quarter and went to play the rest of the night.
Webb had prepared all week to be the Vikings' starter, but in the final hours before Monday's game, Favre declared himself able to go. Favre's stint was short-lived, however, as he had to leave the game before halftime due to injury. Exit Favre, enter the rookie from UAB.
It wasn't exactly the best of conditions for Birmingham native Webb to make his prime time debut. The game had to be moved to the outdoor stadium at the University of Minnesota from the Metrodome which had sustained major roof damage due to heavy snowfall a week earlier. It was the first Minnesota home game played outdoors in nearly 30 years.
With light snow falling, the wind chill temperature hovered around zero throughout the night.
And the opponent was the Chicago Bears and their rugged defense.
Still, Webb, who earned 2009 Conference USA Offensive Player of the Year honors for the Blazers, performed admirably. He finished with 15 completions in 26 attempts for 129 yards. He also registered his first NFL career touchdown when he scored from 13 yards out in the third quarter.
