BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Juniors Laura McCalla, Pascale Pinard and Allison Young earned Conference USA All-Academic Second Team honors for women's soccer, as announced Wednesday by the league office. The three selections represent the most ever for the Blazers.
McCalla has been stellar not only in the classroom, but also on the pitch this season. The Fayetteville, Ga., native has a 3.39 GPA in industrial design and has twice been named to the C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll. The 5-5 forward earned all-conference second team honors after leading the league with 12 goals and ranking second with 30 points.
Pinard continued her academic and athletic success into her junior campaign. A native of Trois-Rivieres, Quebec, Pinard is a two-time recipient of the C-USA Commissioner's Academic Medal and two-time member of the C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll. She currently holds a 3.95 GPA in physical education. In addition to helping the Blazers produce five shutouts, the 5-8 defender scored her first career goal against Southern Miss on Oct. 1 and ranked second on the team with five assists.
Young also has been named to the C-USA Commissioner's Honor Roll the past two seasons and currently has a 3.91 GPA in accounting. A native of Evansville, Ind., Young earned the start in 17 matches on the back line this season. The 5-3 defender helped the Blazers to five shutouts, including four in conference action.
It marked the first all-academic award for each of the three Blazers as they joined 2010 graduate Danielle Blair as the only UAB recipients of the honor.
