BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The UAB baseball program has signed Chase Davis, a dual-position player from Montgomery, Ala., to a National Letter of Intent as the early signing period continues.
A right-handed pitcher and shortstop at Alabama Christian Academy, Davis is listed by the Perfect Game USA scouting service as the No. 11 recruit in the state of Alabama.
"In a sport with such limited scholarships, signing dual-position players is important to being good both on the mound and in the field," UAB head coach Brian Shoop said. "We fully believe Chase will be a two-way player in college and will excel at both spots. On the mound, he is a hard-throwing right-handed pitcher who has a chance to be a dominant power arm at this level. He is further advanced than most high school pitchers and should be able to help our staff immediately."
As a sophomore in 2009, Davis was named to the Alabama Sports Writers Association All-State Team. His 11 triples that year are tied for the fourth-most in a single season in Alabama High School Athletic Association history.
Davis then earned honorable mention all-state honors as a junior this past spring after hitting .455 with seven home runs and 55 RBI. He also was invited to participate in the 2010 Alabama North-South All-Star Game.
"As a position player, Chase is an athletic young man who can run, hit and has the potential to hit with power," Shoop said. "He is really the complete package as a player, and we anticipate Chase helping us on both sides of the ball. He is extremely versatile and can play many positions in the field, which will be another asset to our team."
At the 2010 East Coast Professional Showcase in Lakeland, Fla., Davis ran the 60-yard dash in 6.6 seconds to finish near the top out of 125 players.
Davis has helped his Alabama Christian team finish in the final four of class 4A in each of the past two seasons. His team was ranked No. 1 in the final 4A poll of 2010. He spent his freshman year at Macon-East Montgomery Academy, helping his team to the Alabama Independent School Association championship game.
Davis will enroll at UAB for the 2011-12 academic year and compete for the Blazers beginning with the 2012 season.
"Another thing we liked about Chase is a great balance between being very competitive on the field, while being just a tremendous kid off the field," Shoop said. "Our fans will love the way he plays and will love him even more off the field just because he is such a great kid. He makes our program better in every way."
