WASHINGTON, D.C. -- The UAB men's soccer team finished the non-conference portion of its schedule with its first draw of the 2010 campaign, a scoreless tie at American University on Tuesday afternoon.
It marked the third time since 2004 the Blazers have had a 0-0 result in a match. UAB had scoreless draws against Mercer in 2006 and against Marshall last season. Furthermore, it is only the 10th scoreless tie in UAB head coach Mike Getman's 19 seasons at UAB.
"There is no doubt that we were a tired team," UAB head coach Mike Getman said. "We played an intense game Saturday night and had to travel and play a very good team less than 72 hours later. We just didn't have the energy we've had in other games. Both teams had chances but we couldn't finish. The guys played as hard as they could possibly play. We just didn't get the result."
The Blazers (8-5-1) were outshot by the Eagles (6-7-2), 20-11, on the day, including an 7-4 edge in shots on goal.
Junior goalkeeper Tucker Stone recorded his second start and his second shutout of the year. Stone, a native of Fairview, N.C., recorded a career-best seven saves in his 110 minutes of action. In comparison, American goalie Billy Knutsen made four stops.
Junior forward Babayele Sodade and senior midfielder Kevin Sawchak had three shots apiece to lead the Blazers, while the Eagles' Jamie Davin recorded a game-high five shots.
The Blazers will return to C-USA action for a matchup against league-leading UCF on Saturday night. The contest against the No. 18 Knights is set to kick off at 5:30 p.m. ET (4:30 p.m. CT) in Orlando, Fla.
