TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- Giorgia Romeo picked up the lone win for the UAB women's tennis team Saturday as the Blazers dropped their dual-match season opener at No. 25 Alabama, 6-1.
Romeo split the first two sets in the No. 3 singles match with Alabama's Paulina Bigos before Bigos was forced to retire in the third.
"Giorgia played well today, especially in the first set," UAB head coach Krissy Hall said. "And I thought overall we actually played pretty well against a very good team. I think our girls saw they can compete at that level."
UAB (0-1) lost the remaining five singles matches as Paula Alvarez and Jenny Cape turned in the closest contests for the Blazers. Alvarez drew the task of facing 82nd-ranked Alexa Guarachi at the No. 2 position and battled to a 6-2, 6-3 loss, while Cape suffered a 6-3, 6-2 defeat to Alice Tunaru at the No. 6 spot.
Alabama (1-0) opened the team match by sweeping the doubles action. The closest result came at No. 1 doubles, where UAB's tandem of Alvarez and Evelien Strijker lost an 8-5 decision to Alabama's Courtney McLane and Antonia Foehse.
"We had so many chances in doubles," Hall said. "The scores were not close at two and three, but there were only a few games where we didn't have the first ad. We just couldn't win the big points. Overall, it was a good first match."
After opening the season on the road, UAB now returns to Birmingham for three straight matches. The Blazers kick off that stretch Jan. 31 when they play Charlotte at 9:30 a.m. CT on the campus of Samford University.
