BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Ceylan Engin, the lone senior member of the Blazer women's tennis team, has been selected as the UAB Student-Athlete of the Week.
As a junior last season, Engin was named to the Conference USA Commissioner's Honor Roll. Additionally, she was one of three UAB women's tennis players to be recognized as ITA Scholar-Athletes for managing a GPA of 3.5 or better over the previous academic year.
On the court, the Istanbul, Turkey, native is entering her final season with the Blazers. As a junior in 2008-09, Engin totaled eight singles wins and split time during the spring campaign between the No. 5 and No. 6 spots in the singles lineup. In doubles, she partnered mostly with Jenny Cape to form UAB's No. 3 duo.
The UAB Student-Athlete of the Week is highlighted each Sunday night on Blazers All-Access, which airs locally at 11:05 p.m. on ABC 33/40.
Engin and the women's tennis team are preparing to open their 2010 spring season this weekend. The Blazers will travel to Tuscaloosa, Ala., for a dual match with Alabama on Saturday at 10 a.m. CT.
