BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- UAB senior quarterback Joe Webb has been named the Conference USA Offensive Player-of-the-Week after his record-setting performance in last Saturday's season-opening 44-24 victory over Rice.
Webb, a product of Birmingham's Wenonah High School, passed for 221 yards and ran for 194 yards against the Owls, the latter a C-USA record for rushing yards in a game by a quarterback. Webb's 194 total surpassed the previous league record of 177 yards set by another UAB quarterback, Thomas Cox, vs. Tulane in 2001.
Webb completed 12-of-15 passes and threw for two touchdowns in the game with no interceptions.
He also ran for a pair of scores, one a 15-yarder in the first quarter and the second coming on a career-long 71-yard dash early in the second period.
Webb's 415 yards of total offense in the game was also a career-best.
Webb now owns three of the top five C-USA single-game performances for rushing by a quarterback.
Through the first weekend of the season, Webb is listed second nationally in three different NCAA categories: rushing (194.0), total offense (415.0) and passing efficiency (247.8).
UAB (1-0, 1-0 C-USA) will be home again this coming Saturday when the Blazers play host to the SMU Mustangs in another Conference USA contest, starting at 3:00 p.m. at Legion Field. The game will be carried on the Blazers ISP Sports Network and can be heard in the Birmingham area on flagship station WUHT-FM 107.7. The pregame show will begin at 1:30 p.m.
