BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- The UAB football team spent just over two hours on the practice field here Wednesday, continuing its final preparations for Saturday's season opener against the Rice Owls.
Blazers' head coach Neil Callaway was relatively pleased with Wednesday's workout but said his team still has some fine-tuning to do before it tees it up against the Owls Saturday afternoon (3:07 p.m. CT/CSS (Comcast Sports Southeast).
"I thought it (practice) was good," Callaway said. "We're starting to get a little sharper on Rice. We aren't perfect by any means, but the 11-on-11 work was good as it was yesterday. I was disappointed in the team work yesterday. That was better today. We're making progress. We've got tomorrow's practice and then walk-through on Friday.
"We've got two days left of preparation and we need to make sure we utilize all of our time."
The Blazers will practice at Legion Field Thursday, their third session of the preseason on their home field. "We've been on that turf twice this fall, and I think the more we can get on the turf, the better off we will be. I don't want it to be anything new to us."
The Conference USA contest Saturday will represent the third meeting between the schools. UAB won at home in 2005 by a 45-26 before the Owls avenged that defeat a year later with a 34-33 victory in Houston.
In addition to the regional telecast by CSS, Saturday's UAB/Rice game will also be carried on the Blazers ISP Sports Network and can be heard in the Birmingham area on flagship station WUHT-FM 107.7. The pregame show will begin at 1:30 p.m.
