BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB football team continued working towards Saturday's rivalry game against in-state foe Troy Thursday morning. The team practiced for approximately two hours in shorts and pads at the UAB practice field.
"Well, the energy was good this morning," head coach Neil Callaway said. "We still have a lot of work to do as far as getting ready for Troy, but overall it was good."
The Blazers (1-1, 1-1 C-USA) will face off against the Trojans Saturday in Troy, Ala., marking the first contest between the in-state rivals in three years. The series is currently tied 3-3, with UAB winning the last meeting 21-3 on Sept. 30, 2006.
"I think this is a good series for both of us," Callaway said. "It's an in-state rivalry game and I think it has a lot of merit to it and we want to win very bad."
Both teams are anxious for a win and Callaway is confident that his offense has put last Saturday's game behind them and will be prepared for Troy's defense this weekend.
"We just have to execute better," Callaway said. "Offensively we need to come out, start fast and just be ready to go."
Callaway named senior DB Brandon Carlisle and junior DE Derek Slaughter as the defensive captains, sophomore DB Ugonna Amarikwa as the special teams captain and senior WR Mark Ferrell as the offensive captain for Saturday's matchup.
UAB and Troy will kick off at 2:30 p.m. Saturday at Movie Gallery Veterans Stadium. The game will be regionally televised by CSS (Comcast/Charter Sports Southeast) and will also be carried on the Blazers ISP Sports Network.
The radio broadcast can be heard in the Birmingham area on flagship station WUHT-FM 107.7, with the pregame show beginning at 1:00 p.m.
