BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Sophomore cornerback Andre Hicks of the Blazer football team is this week's UAB Student-Athlete of the Week.
After playing in eight games as a true freshman a year ago, Hicks has started both 2009 contests in the defensive backfield, and he owns four tackles on the season.
Hicks scored his first career touchdown Saturday against SMU when he and fellow cornerback Brandon Carlisle combined on UAB's first defensive score of the year. Carlisle intercepted an SMU pass and then had the ball jarred loose. Hicks snared it in mid-air and returned it 20 yards to the endzone.
In the classroom, Hicks boasts a 3.08 GPA as a biology major. The Atlanta, Ga., native was one of 19 UAB football players to earn recognition on last year's Conference USA Commissioner's Honor Roll.
The UAB Student-Athlete of the Week is highlighted each Sunday night on Blazers All-Access, which airs locally at 11:35 p.m. on ABC 33/40.
Hicks and the Blazer football team are back in action this weekend with their first road trip of the season. UAB is set for a 2:30 p.m. CT matchup Saturday at Troy in a game that will be televised by CSS and broadcast in Birmingham on WUHT-FM 107.7.
