BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- The UAB football team went through its second day of fall camp here Friday and head coach Neil Callaway said he was pleased with his team's afternoon workout.
"I thought it was a very good practice," said Callaway. "By no means was it perfect, but we had great effort all day and really with every drill. I thought the intensity and enthusiasm was very good.
"We've still got to get some kinks worked out and get some things polished up, but the attitude was good on both sides of the ball."
Callaway also said some of young newcomers caught his eye on Friday. "I thought (wide receiver) Patrick Hearn especially did some nice things," Callaway said. "I think the young linebackers, (Greg) Irvin and (Marvin) Burdette and (Patrick) Bastien, they're doing some good things. The safeties, (Hiram) Atwater, (Elliott) McGaskin and (A.J.) Wilson, had a good practice. Of course, we don't have pads on yet, but I have been pleased to this point."
The Blazers will continue their preseason work Saturday when they practice in the afternoon. UAB opens the season on Saturday, Sept. 5 when the Blazers play host to the Rice Owls in a Conference USA matchup set for 3:00 p.m. at Legion Field.
