BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The UAB football team had a light but productive practice day at the UAB football practice field on Wednesday, working out in helmets and shoulder pads for approximately 90 minutes. The team continues to build toward the 2009 season-opening contest against Rice on Sept. 5.
UAB head coach Neil Callaway was pleased in particular with the work his kickers did during the 15-period session.
"I thought today was good," Callaway said. "We started with a really good session in the kicking game. We're trying to make sure we are ready to go there. After that, we just really rehearsed some things for Rice. It wasn't a demanding day after the first 15-20 minutes, but overall I thought it was good."
Despite the light workout, the coaching staff continued to work toward familiarizing the team with the Rice gameplan. With all the efforts pointed toward the season opener, Callaway still feels there are some areas that need to improve heading into the campaign.
"I think the safeties are trying to get back a little bit," Callaway said. "They are not full speed yet, but they are getting out there and doing some things. Hopefully by Saturday, everybody should be ready. I am still concerned about safeties, offensive line and linebackers. We still have work to do."
The Blazers will open the 2009 season on Saturday, Sept. 5 when they play host to Conference USA opponent Rice at Legion Field. The game will kick off at 3:00 p.m. and will be televised regionally by CSS (Comcast/Charter Sports Southeast).
