BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - For the first time this season, the UAB football team spent a portion of Tuesday's practice working on the scouting report for Rice, its first opponent of the 2009 campaign.
The Blazers spent an hour-and-a-half on the practice fields in full pads in their first day back on the field since last Saturday's scrimmage.
With the first half of practice dedicated to working on the Blazers' schemes and the second half devoted to working on the scouting report for Rice, UAB head coach Neil Callaway had mixed feelings about the day.
"Today was the first day back after a couple of days off," said Callaway. "I thought the first part of practice was really good. We did a lot of UAB vs. UAB stuff and some fundamentals. It was good. The defense really stepped up today.
"After that, we broke off and did some scout work. It was the first day that we've done that and we've got to be more productive there. It takes some getting used to with how everything goes. With the first day of focusing completely on Rice for half of the practice, we have to get better work out of our scout work."
Despite needing better results when working on the scouting reports, Callaway was pleased with the energy that the team had overall.
"I thought the attitude, enthusiasm and tempo was good," said Callaway. "We've just got to continue to get better. We've got this week and next week to prepare before we play Rice. We have to be ready."
UAB continues to work towards its season-opening contest versus Conference USA foe Rice on Sept. 5. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m. CT at Legion Field and will be televised on CSS.
