BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- The UAB football team went through a two-hour practice in shells Thursday morning and for one of the few times during preseason drills, head coach Neil Callaway left the practice field not pleased with his team's performance.
"It was a bad day, to be honest," said Callaway, whose team will hold its second preseason scrimmage on Saturday. "I thought they were very sluggish, not into it. It was one of the first bad practices to this point of the camp.
"We can sit here and make excuses for them like we're tired, beat up and all that. But the bottom line is we didn't have a good day."
Callaway hopes his team will bounce back with a productive practice on Friday as they work toward Saturday's scrimmage at Legion Field.
"I think we as coaches have to challenge them, point out what's wrong," said Callaway. "But the biggest thing was effort and attitude this morning. That's what you look for, but they weren't into it this morning. So we had a bad day.
"Tomorrow will be a short practice, so hopefully, we'll get some people rested up and have a good scrimmage Saturday."
The Blazers will open the 2009 season on Saturday, Sept. 5 when they play host to Conference USA Rice at Legion Field. The game will kick off at 3:00 p.m. and will be televised regionally by CSS (Comcast/Charter Sports Southeast).
