BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB football team endured its second bout of two-a-day practices during fall camp Friday with an hour-and-a-half session in the morning in full pads and an hour session in shorts and helmets in the afternoon. Friday marked the second of three scheduled days with two practices this fall.
With the first scrimmage of the fall Saturday, UAB head coach Neil Callaway used Friday's practices to run through situations and rest the team for tomorrow.
"We were just in helmets so we ran a lot of situations, third-down primarily and a little more one-minute (offense)," said Callaway. "I think we got a lot out of it. Obviously we weren't in pads but we were trying to get a little rest before tomorrow."
Saturday's scrimmage will be a strong indicator of where the team is after 10 practices in fall camp. Callaway plans to run approximately 120 plays during the scrimmage with various situations.
"Tomorrow will be a mighty big day for us and these guys as individuals to see where we are at, where we are going and who we are going to play with," said Callaway. "It won't be over tomorrow, but it will be the first time that we will come up with a pecking order of who's who."
UAB kicks off the 2009 season on Saturday, Sept. 5 at 3 p.m. when the Blazers host Rice at Legion Field.
