BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB football team practiced for two hours at the practice fields as it continued fall camp on Thursday. The Blazers went through 20 periods in shorts and helmets as they prepare for a pair of practices on tap for Friday.
With the past three days being full contact practices for the Blazers, UAB head coach Neil Callaway thought the team needed a day without full pads before they don the pads again on Friday.
"I thought today was good," said Callaway. "We took the pads off because we've had three days in a row of pretty good contact and we are going to come out in the morning full speed. I felt like we just needed to back off a little.
"During this time of the year, you have to go back and forth a little. We had three good days of contact. You can't bang them everyday. We're just trying to think ahead and plan it out."
Callaway was especially pleased with the progress made during the 11-on-11 drills towards the end of practice.
"I thought we got a lot out of the 11-on-11 at the end," said Callaway. "We did a lot of situation stuff, working on different things, and I thought it was very productive."
The Blazers' season-opener will be on Sept. 5 when they host Conference USA foe Rice at 3 p.m. CT at Legion Field.
