BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB football team endured a pair of practices on Wednesday with an hour-and-a-half session in the morning in shorts and helmets, followed by a two-hour practice in the afternoon in full pads. Wednesday was the first of three days on the Blazer schedule with two practices.
UAB head coach Neil Callaway was encouraged by both practices on the day. Admittedly not where they need to be yet, Callaway believes the Blazers are headed in the right direction after less than a week of fall camp under their belts.
"I thought, overall, the whole day was good," said Callaway. "We had a good workout this morning in shorts. This afternoon, we did a lot of contact and physical stuff.
"Today was a grind, but I think overall it was good and both sides competed. We are by no means where we want to be, but they did good work today."
Callaway saw many positives in the running game today, specifically with junior college transfer Daniel Borne and sophomore Dexter Barnett.
"Two guys that really stood out were two running backs," said Callaway. "Daniel Borne was exceptional. We had the competition part at the end of practice, and if it wasn't for him, the offense wouldn't have won. Dexter Barnett also had a good day."
The Blazers will return to the field for their seventh day of fall camp on Thursday. UAB continues to work towards its 2009 season opener against Conference USA foe Rice on Sept. 5 at 3 p.m. CT at Legion Field.
