BIRMINGHAM, Ala. ----- The UAB football team went through its first practice of fall camp in full pads Tuesday and head coach Neil Callaway thought his team's effort was good despite the workout being cut short about 30 minutes due to lightning in the area.
"We did get cut short, but overall it was a good practice ," said Callaway. "We had a lot of contact drills and I saw a lot of good competition out there. Defensively, I thought (sophomore DT) Elliott Henigan had a good day, (junior DE) Derek Slaughter, and (junior DE) Timmy Davis, (sophomore LB) Lamanski Ware had good days and stood out."
Callaway also singled out several players on the offensive side of the ball. "Offensively, I thought (junior TE) Jeffery Anderson did a real nice job blocking. (Junior RB) Daniel Borne had a good run. (Senior RB) Rashaud Slaughter had a good day."
As far as the freshmen who caught Callaway's eye on Tuesday, he said "Ed Pruitt did some good things. (Center) Blake Bennett and (LT Chris) Hubbard showed some good things. I'm not saying they're ready, but I think it's a good group as a whole. We just have to keep working and make sure we are getting better every day."
The Blazers will practice twice on Wednesday, going in helmets in the morning and back in full pads for the afternoon session.
