UAB Finishes Day One At NCAA Regional

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - In her last race as a Blazer, UAB senior Alina Varpiotaite was unable to advance to the finals in the 800-meter run at the NCAA Track & Field Mideast Regional here on Friday. The senior finished 19th overall with a time of 2:11.96.
As her UAB career comes to a close, Varpiotaite holds three school records and has been a regional qualifier the past three years in a row. She has earned six indoor All-Conference USA honors and two outdoor All-Conference USA honors over her four years as a Blazer.
Two more athletes from UAB, Samantha Hamilton and Nora Mehl, will compete Saturday in hopes of qualifying for the NCAA Championships. Mehl will be the first to compete in the high jump at 12 p.m. CT. Hamilton will be taking part in the triple jump, scheduled to start at 4:00 p.m. CT.
