BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB softball team (11-23, 4-11 C-USA) will take a break from league play on Tuesday, as Western Kentucky (18-11, 5-4 Sun Belt) will come to George Ward Park for a 5 p.m. CT doubleheader.
The Blazers are 2-0 all-time against the Hilltoppers. Last season, thanks in part to the pitching efforts of Kayla Harris and Jennifer Nelson, UAB swept a doubleheader with Western Kentucky, 3-1 and 6-1, in Birmingham, Ala. The Blazers were able to hold the Hilltoppers to a combined seven hits on the day.
UAB enters the twin bill on a four-game losing streak. This past weekend, the Blazers dropped a three-game Conference USA series to the Houston Cougars in Houston, Texas. UAB jumped out to early leads in all three games, but were unable to hold on as the Cougars would rally and steal all three victories.
Laura Callaway and Catherine Douglass led the way for the Blazers in the weekend's losses. Callaway hit .400 for the series, including one home run and one double. Douglass hit .364 for the weekend with four RBI, two runs scored and one home run.
Inclement weather forced the cancellation of WKU's last contest against Evansville on Thursday. In their previous outing, the Hilltoppers were able to defeat Tennessee Tech, 3-0 in Cookeville, Tenn. on last Wednesday.
Lindsey Antone is hitting .327 for Western Kentucky. She leads the team with five home runs and is tied for a team-best 17 RBI. As a team, WKU is batting .259.
Ryan Rogge (14-5) has been impressive in the pitcher's circle for the Hilltoppers this season. She has an ERA of 1.30 and has thrown eight shutouts this year. In 117.2 innings pitched, Rogge has struck out 71 batters and allowed only nine walks. Opponents are struggling against the right-hander with a meager .196 batting average. The Hilltoppers' team-ERA is 2.39.
