Houston Completes Sweep Of UAB

HOUSTON, Texas - After building a 2-0 lead, the UAB softball (11-23, 4-11 C-USA) team fell to the Houston Cougars (18-16, 7-4 C-USA) here on Sunday at Cougar Softball Stadium, 3-2. With the win, Houston completed the three-game series sweep of the Blazers.
"There's a lot we can learn from today," said UAB head coach Marla Townsend. "We are still playing hard. We are a young team and we've got to keep improving with each game."
UAB took an early 2-0 lead in the second inning on a base hit to left centerfield by Kayla Harris. Mandy Lowman was able to score from second and Cameron Skates scored after a throwing error by the Cougars on the play.
Houston cut the lead in half with a RBI double by Melissa Gregson in the bottom of the fourth inning.
In the fifth inning with the bases loaded, Lindsey Croft walked Haley Valis and Katy Beth Sherman scored to tie the game 2-2. The next batter, Melissa Gregson, grounded out to end the inning.
Houston took a 3-2 lead in the sixth inning when Christa Raley hit a sacrifice fly to left field allowing Jessica Valis to score from third.
Lindsey Croft (5-13) recorded the loss after pitching two innings in relief of starter Kayla Harris (0-1). Croft walked three batters and allowed one hit and one run. Harris pitched four innings and allowed seven hits and two runs with one strikeout.
Cameron Skates led UAB at the plate, recording two hits and one run.
The Blazers return to action on Tuesday as Western Kentucky comes to George Ward Park for a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 5:00 p.m. CT.
