Softball Inks One More For 2010 Season

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - UAB softball head coach Marla Townsend has announced an addition to her 2010 signing class. Suiting up for the Green and Gold next season will be junior college transfer and Alabama native, Alisha Smith.
"We are extremely excited about Alisha becoming a Blazer," said Townsend. "She is an outstanding pitcher who has the tools to shut down opponents. I have seen Alisha play softball for several years now and I look forward to the opportunity of coaching her final years of eligibility here at UAB."
Smith, a native of Springville, Ala., is currently a pitcher on Jefferson State Community College's roster. She is 6-6 on the year with a 2.15 ERA. As a freshman in 2008, she was named to the Alabama Community College Conference's All-Conference and All- State teams after compiling a 17-14 record with a 2.94 ERA. She recorded 125 strikeouts while allowing 33 walks. Offensively, Smith batted .281 with a .359 slugging percentage.
During her high school career, Smith received numerous awards and accolades. She was named to the 2007 Birmingham News' Super All-Metro team and the Birmingham News' Class 5A team. She was named the St. Clair News-Aegis 2006-07 Softball Player of the Year for St. Clair County. In 2004 and 2007 she helped lead her high school team to finish as runner-up at the Class 5A state championship. Also in 2007, Smith was named the Birmingham News' North/East Pitcher of the Year after posting a 26-9 record with a .092 ERA.
At Springville High School, Smith was a member of the basketball, volleyball and softball teams. She is the only high school player to reach 1,000 strikeouts, kills, rebounds and points in their high school career.
