NORTHRIDGE, Calif. -- The UAB women's tennis team earned a 4-3 win Sunday over Conference USA foe Southern Miss in the first of three straight matches for the Blazers in the state of California.
After losing the doubles point, UAB bounced back to win four out of the six singles matches to secure its second consecutive victory. The Blazers have now defeated the Golden Eagles in a dual match in each of the past four seasons.
UAB improves to 4-3 for the spring, while Southern Miss falls to 1-6.
With the team match on the line, Giorgia Romeo pulled out the decisive victory for UAB at the No. 3 singles position, winning 7-5, 6-3 to lock up the victory. At No. 1 singles, UAB's Evelien Strijker split the first two sets with Elja van Berlo before winning the third 6-0 in dominating fashion.
"I'm really proud of the way our girls fought today in singles," UAB head coach Krissy Hall said. "We were really thinking strategically on the court and playing smart tennis."
In doubles action, the duo of Alvarez and Strijker picked up a win with a 9-8 victory at the top spot, but the Blazers lost the other two.
UAB will remain in California for two more matches this week. The Blazers play Tuesday at UC Santa Barbara and Wednesday at Cal State Northridge.
