UAB Splits Doubleheader with Southern Miss

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - The UAB softball team opened up Conference USA play with a 7-2 win against Southern Miss on Saturday at George Ward Park. The Blazers dropped the second contest, 5-0.
"We won one and they won one," said UAB head coach Marla Townsend. "We were unable to get the hits in the second game that we were getting in the first. We were a different team in each game."
In the first game of the day, UAB jumped out to an early 2-0 lead after freshman Catherine Douglass hit a two-run home run to left center field. The home run was her third on the season.
In the fifth inning sophomore Amanda Allen hit her third home run of the year with a two-run shot to centerfield. Then after loading the bases, the Blazers drew two consecutive walks to score two runs. Sophomore Caley Walden tacked on the final run after scoring on a wild pitch from third.
Southern Miss was able to score two runs in the fifth on two errors by UAB.
Leading UAB at the plate in the 7-2 victory was Allen. She went 3-for-3 with two RBI and one run scored. Douglass was 1-for-2 with three RBI and one run scored.
Freshman Lindsey Croft (3-7) picked up her third win on the year. She struck out seven and allowed four hits in seven innings pitched.
The Golden Eagles got on the board first in game two with a RBI double by Kristin Pilgrim. An error turned into a fifth inning run for Southern Miss before scoring three more runs in the sixth.
Courtney Ramos (7-4) kept the Blazers in check through seven innings of pitching. She allowed two hits and struck out seven.
Sara Swepston (2-2) took the loss for the Blazers, surrendering nine hits and four runs.
With the split UAB moves to 7-10 overall and 1-1 in Conference USA. The Golden Eagles are now 10-12-1 overall and 1-1 in the league.
The Blazers will go for the series win on Sunday beginning at 1 p.m. CT at George Ward Park.
