TALLAHASSEE, FLA. - Junior John Darby shot his second consecutive round of one-under par 71 and is in a tie for sixth overall through two rounds of the Seminole Intercollegiate. As a team, the Blazers will enter Sunday's final 18 holes in eighth overall with a team score total of 590 (296-294) through the opening 36 holes.
"We need to continue to get better as a team," UAB head coach Alan Kaufman said. "John continues to play well and I'm proud of his performance. We have to get more consistent play out of the rest of our team. We are still in a position where we can have a good finish if we play well tomorrow."
Despite being in eighth overall in the 12-team field, the Blazers are only nine strokes back of fourth place through 36 holes. Ole Miss (570), ranked No. 25 in the nation, leads the field by just one stroke over Virginia (571). Vanderbilt is in third with a 576, while No. 22 Florida State (581) and No. 21 Arkansas (583) rounds out the top five.
Darby's back-to-back rounds of 71 puts him at two-under par 142 through the first two days of the tournament. That number bests his previous career-low 36-hole score of 144, set last season at the Sam Hall Intercollegiate. Additionally, his previous best tournament finish is a tie for 31st which he accomplished last fall at the Shoal Creek Intercollegiate.
Darby, a native of Birmingham, Ala., will enter the final round three strokes back of the overall lead, which is currently a three-way tie at five under par 139 between Joe David of Ole Miss, Ryan Haselden of Vanderbilt and Conrad von Borsig of Virginia.
Junior Adam West carded an even par round of 72 on the afternoon and is also among the top-20 golfers in the tournament, coming in at a tie for 15th overall with a 146 (74-72) through two rounds. Senior Kaylor Timmons is in a tie for 32nd with a two-round total of 149 (75-74). Senior All-American Zack Sucher is in a tie for 46th overall with a 153, while redshirt Freshman Blake Watts rounds out UAB with a 164.
UAB is set to tee off the final round with a shotgun start on Sunday morning at 8 a.m. ET. Live stats can be followed by logging onto golfstat.com.
