BIRMINGHAM, Ala - The UTEP Miners (20-17, 6-6 C-USA) hit four home runs on the afternoon to top the UAB softball team (11-20, 4-8 C-USA) on Sunday at George Ward Park, 6-1.
"We weren't consistent out there today," said UAB head coach Marla Townsend. "Our pitchers struggled and so did our bats. We need someone to step it up and start producing for us."
UTEP took an early 1-0 lead when lead-off hitter Camilla Carrera hit a home run to left field. At the start of the second inning, Shea Lodes continued the Miners' trend with a solo shot to left field to bring the score to 2-0.
In the fourth inning, Loades hit her second solo home run of the day with a deep ball to right centerfield. Later in the inning with two outs and a runner on second, Carrera hit her second home run of the day with shot to right centerfield to grab a 5-0 lead.
The Miners last run came in the sixth inning after UAB's pitching walked in a run.
Freshman Maegan Hornsby scored UAB's only run on the afternoon with her first career home run to left field in the bottom of the sixth inning.
UTEP's Stacie Townsend (12-10) pitched all seven innings, striking out nine and allowed only four hits and one walk.
Senior Kayla Harris (0-1) picked up the loss in her first start of the season in the circle for the Blazers. In two innings, Harris allowed three hits, two runs and struck out two.
Harris led the Green and Gold at the plate with two of UAB's' four hits.
The Blazers next contest comes on Tuesday as they travel to Huntsville, Ala. to take on Alabama A&M in a non-conference doubleheader. First pitch is scheduled for 2:00 p.m. CT.
