BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- UAB will welcome more than 25 injured service men and women to Young Memorial Field for Friday night's baseball series opener against Savannah State.
The group includes military personnel from all over the country, including as far away as Hawaii, who are in Birmingham for the U.S. Paralympic Military Sports Camp. The camp is for veterans who have sustained physical injuries and is organized by Lakeshore Foundation's Lima Foxtrot Program for Injured Military and the United States Olympic Committee's Paralympic Military Program.
Friday's game is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start. UAB has donated tickets for all camp participants as well as Lakeshore Foundation staff members.
The camp starts Thursday evening with an opening reception, and sports activities get underway Friday morning. Participants will compete in various activities, including archery, basketball, shooting, swimming, track and field, sit volleyball and cycling. The public is invited to Lakeshore Foundation at 6 p.m. Saturday to meet injured military personnel.
For UAB, Friday's game is the first of a three-game weekend series with Savannah State at Young Memorial Field. Game two is scheduled for 2 p.m. Saturday, while game three is set for 1 p.m. Sunday.
