HOOVER, Ala. -- UAB and Alabama played into the top of the sixth inning of Wednesday's baseball game at Regions Park before the game was stopped because of rain.
UAB led 2-1 through five completed innings, but Alabama scored a run in the top of the sixth to tie the game 2-2 before play was stopped.
The teams are seeking an official ruling from a member of the NCAA rules committee on whether the contest is considered official or halted.
If it is an official game, UAB would be declared a 2-1 winner because, by rule, the score must revert back to that of the last equal inning played. If it is declared a halted game, the teams would look for a date to complete the contest.
The teams hope to have an official ruling Thursday.
Jonathan Merritt, Brint Hardy and Luke Stewart each collected a hit Wednesday as the teams managed just three hits apiece through five-plus innings. UAB scored both of its runs in the second inning with Merritt driving in one and the Blazers scoring the other on an Alabama error.
Taylor Dugas, Kent Matthes and Alex Kubal each tallied a hit for the Crimson Tide. Clay Jones recorded an RBI for Alabama on a fielder's choice in the second inning, and Wes Henderson recorded a bases-loaded walk in the top of the sixth for Alabama's second run before the game was stopped.
Beau Pender started the game for UAB and pitched 5.1 innings, allowing two runs and striking out six. Alabama starter Casey Kebodeaux pitched 5.0 innings and surrendered two runs while striking out three.
Rain throughout the day Wednesday made it questionable as to whether or not any of the game would be played. But the weather cleared and the Regions Park field drained, allowing the game to start shortly before 7 p.m. CT. Play was stopped shortly after 8:30 p.m. CT and was never resumed.
