BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - Freshman catcher, Mandy Lowman, has been tabbed as Conference USA's Hitter of the Week after helping the Blazers' softball team pick up four-straight victories this past week. Lowman becomes just the fourth player and the second freshman in UAB's history to receive the award.
Cliffanie Engram was named hitter of the week on three occasions. Her first was as a freshman in 2000. Candice Hithe was a recipient of the award in 2002, while current volunteer assistant coach, Holly Krzan, was the last Blazer to win the award in Feb. 2006.
"What an outstanding performance by Mandy this past week," said UAB softball coach Marla Townsend. "She has been hitting the ball solidly. Mandy is very deserving of this award. Her hard work ethic has paid off big time and has raised her confidence at the plate."
Lowman registered two multi-hit games and went 6-for-8 (.750) to help lead the Blazers to wins over Alabama State, Northern Illinois and Alabama A&M, twice, last week. Offensively, Lowman registered three home runs, two doubles, seven RBI and seven runs scored. She posted a staggering slugging percentage of 2.125 and an on-base percentage of .833. She homered in three straight games starting with the doubleheader against Alabama A&M.
She began the week by going 5-for-6 against Alabama State in a doubleheader, which included her first two career home runs and two doubles. She also scored three times against the Bulldogs and chipped in with six RBI. In the Blazers' weekend games, she added her third home run of the week and four runs scored to extend UAB's win streak to four.
This is Lowman's first career weekly honor.
UAB softball returns to action as they take on No.1 Alabama in Tuscaloosa, Ala. First pitch is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. CT.
