BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- The UAB women's tennis team opens its dual-match schedule Tuesday with a Conference USA contest against Memphis.
The Blazers and Tigers will meet at 9 a.m. CT at the Pat M. Courington Tennis Pavilion on the campus of Samford University. Memphis will also play Samford in the afternoon.
UAB and Memphis competed against each other in most positions two weeks ago in flighted tournament action at the Samford Winter Invitational. The Blazers posted a 4-1 record against the Tigers in singles competition and a 2-1 record in doubles matches. Evelien Strijker, Brittany DeFelice and Ceylan Engin all earned straight-set wins in singles over Memphis opponents, while Jenny Cape won her singles match in three sets.
In last year's meeting between the teams, UAB earned a 4-1 victory on the road at Memphis. Current Blazers Cape and Giorgia Romeo picked up singles victories in that match. UAB has won four consecutive dual matches in the series, dating back to the 2005 spring season.
Tuesday's contest is the first of only three regular-season conference matches for UAB in 2009. It is also the first of three straight matches in Birmingham for UAB. The Blazers will play home matches on campus Feb. 16 versus Jacksonville State and Feb. 20 against North Florida. Those matches will be played at the 11th Avenue South tennis courts.
