BIRMINGHAM, Ala. - UAB head coach Ray Stanfield has added Amanda Whowell to run both cross country and track and field beginning in the 2009-10 season for the Blazers.
Whowell is a product of Rolling Meadows High School in Rolling Meadows, Ill. where she was coached by Jim Voyles. She participated in both cross country and track and field during her prep career with the Mustangs.
Whowell is a two-time indoor and outdoor state championship qualifier for the Mustangs. As a junior, she emerged as a standout in the 2K steeplechase, winning the 2008 Illinois State Junior Olympics with a time of 7:17. She followed that performance with a third place finish in the 2008 United States Junior National Championships, crossing the finish line in 7:02.76.
Whowell also proved a solid cross country performer during her high school career. She finished 23rd at the 2007 USA Track and Field National Junior Olympic Cross Country Championships in the 5K with a time of 20:21.51.
"Amanda signing with UAB continues the tradition of signing some of the top talent in the Midwest," said Stanfield. "Amanda has broken several of the high school records set by former UAB All-American Elizabeth Ambrus. She is a great addition to our program."
Whowell is the second stellar athlete to join the Blazers' cross country and track and field programs. Ambrus, who earned All-America status as well as multiple All-Conference USA accolades from 2004-08, also hailed from Rolling Meadows High School.
