BIRMINGHAM, Ala. -- Paul Delaney III had a triple-double and Lawrence Kinnard posted his league-leading 10th double-double in UAB's 81-61 victory over Tulane on Wednesday night. It was a historic night for the Blazers (15-8, 5-3 C-USA) as Kinnard also reached a milestone.
Delaney's performance of 16 points, 12 assists and 10 rebounds marked the second triple-double in school history. The only other time this was accomplished came on Dec. 16, 1988, when former Blazer great Alan Ogg recorded 14 points, 12 blocks and 10 rebounds in a victory over Florida A&M.
Shadowed by Delaney's feat was Kinnard's historic night. The Memphis, Tenn. native, who recorded 24 points and 10 rebounds on the night, became the second player in school history to record at least 1,000 points and 700 rebounds in a career. Kinnard (1,279 points and 704 rebounds) joins former All-American Jerome Mincy (1,473 points and 933 rebounds) as the only players to accomplish the feat.
"Paul has just been playing great over the last month or so," UAB head coach Mike Davis said. "He energizes our team and when he is playing like he did tonight, we're a tough team to beat.
"This was a good team victory over a very well-coached Tulane team," Davis said "I thought we did a good job on the boards which created some extra possessions for us. I am proud of our guys effort and we need to continue getting better."
All five UAB starters were in double figures. In addition to Delaney and Kinnard, Robert Vaden added 12 points for UAB, while Howard Crawford had 11 and Channing Toney scored 10.
UAB jumped out to a 23-11 lead, but had only a 38-34 margin at halftime. Both teams shot well in the opening half, as the Green Wave connected on 56.5 percent of their shots while the Blazers matched that, hitting at a 50.0 percent clip.
The Blazers opened the second half with a 7-0 spurt to increase their lead to 11, 45-34. With UAB holding a 60-53 advantage with 8:38 remaining, the Blazers went on a 15-4 run over the next 4:23 to take a 75-57 lead and coast to the win.
The Blazers, who have won five of their last six, outrebounded Tulane (9-12, 3-5) 33-22 and connected on 54.7 percent of their shots.
UAB will next travel to take on Southern Miss in Hattiesburg, Miss. on Saturday at 5 p.m. CT. The contest will be televised live on CSS and can also be heard on the Blazers ISP Radio Network, 107.7 FM WUHT.
Robinson Louisme and Kris Richard scored 15 apiece for Tulane.
